Google TV vs Android TV
Google TV is the newer interface built on top of Android TV. If you have a Chromecast with Google TV, this guide is for you! For other Android TV devices (like NVIDIA Shield or Sony TVs), see the Android TV guide.
First, let's get to the Plex settings:
Profile picture location
Your profile picture (or initials) is in the top-left corner of the Plex home screen. Click it, then select "Settings" from the menu.
When on your home WiFi, get the full quality with no compression.
Best quality even when streaming from outside your home.
Prevents sudden quality drops. We want consistent picture quality!
What "Maximum" means
When set to Maximum, Plex sends you the original file without any compression. If you have a 4K HDR movie, you get every single pixel as it was meant to be seen!
This is the most important setting! It tells Plex to send the original file without conversion.
Allows minor format adjustments without re-encoding the video.
Sends surround sound (Dolby, DTS) directly to your soundbar or receiver.
Using TV speakers?
If you don't have a soundbar or surround system, you can leave passthrough OFF. Your Google TV will automatically convert surround audio to stereo for your TV speakers.
Now let's configure Google TV's own settings:
Set this to the highest resolution your TV supports.
Makes your TV match the frame rate of what you're watching.
Why frame rate matching is essential
Movies are shot at 24fps. Without this setting, Google TV converts everything to 60fps, which can cause:
- The "soap opera effect" (motion looks too smooth/fake)
- Judder (stuttery motion during panning shots)
With it ON, movies look natural and cinematic!
Let Google TV detect your TV's HDR capabilities automatically.
Chromecast with Google TV 4K supports:
- HDR10 - Standard HDR
- HDR10+ - Samsung's dynamic HDR
- Dolby Vision - Dynamic HDR (best quality)
✓ Verify It's Working
Here's how to check if you're getting the best quality:
- Start playing any movie or show in Plex
- Press down on the remote during playback
- Look for an info or "..." button
- Check for "Direct Play" in the playback info
- If you see "Transcode," review your settings

Buffering or stuttering
- Chromecast with Google TV relies on WiFi - make sure you have a strong signal
- Consider an ethernet adapter (USB-C hub with ethernet port)
- Move the Chromecast closer to your router
- Try lowering quality temporarily to test bandwidth
4K or HDR not working
- Check Google TV Settings → Display & Sound → Resolution
- Make sure your TV's HDMI port has "Enhanced" or "UHD Deep Color" enabled
- Use the included power adapter - USB from TV may not provide enough power
Plex keeps transcoding instead of Direct Play
- Subtitles can force transcoding - try SRT subtitles instead of PGS/image-based
- Some audio formats (TrueHD, DTS-HD) may need to transcode
- Make sure quality is set to Maximum, not a specific bitrate
