Which Roku Do You Have?
Roku Ultra / Streaming Stick 4K / Express 4K+: Supports 4K and HDR - follow all steps.
Roku Express / Premiere (non-4K): Limited to 1080p - still follow the guide, just skip 4K settings.
There are two ways to access settings:
Full quality when streaming on your home network.
Full quality when streaming from outside your home.
"Auto" lets Plex decide, "Forced" always tries Direct Play first. Try "Auto" first.
Allows minor format changes without full re-encoding.
Auto vs Forced
Auto: Plex figures out the best option - usually works great.
Forced: Always tries Direct Play/Stream first, even if it might not work. Use this if Auto isn't giving you Direct Play when it should.
Now let's configure your Roku's system settings:
Choose the highest option your TV supports. Roku will auto-detect, but you can manually select if needed.
Don't see 4K HDR as an option?
Make sure your Roku is connected to an HDMI port that supports 4K HDR. On many TVs, only certain ports (often HDMI 1 or 2) support full 4K HDR.
This matches your TV's refresh rate to the content being played - crucial for smooth playback!
Why this matters
Movies are filmed at 24 frames per second. Without refresh rate matching, your Roku converts this to 60fps, which can cause judder or the "soap opera effect." With it on, movies look natural and cinematic!
Make sure you select a display type that includes HDR:
- 4K HDR10 - Standard HDR format, widely compatible
- 4K Dolby Vision - If your TV supports Dolby Vision (looks even better)
HDR10 vs Dolby Vision
HDR10: Works on all HDR TVs. Great quality.
Dolby Vision: Dynamic HDR that adjusts scene-by-scene. Slightly better, but requires TV support.
Let Roku detect your audio setup, or manually choose if you have surround sound.
If you have a soundbar or AVR, choose Passthrough to send full surround audio.

Here's how to check if you're getting the best quality:

Buffering or loading issues
- Roku Ultra has an ethernet port - use it for more stable streaming
- For Streaming Sticks, consider an ethernet adapter
- Move your Roku closer to your WiFi router
- Try temporarily lowering quality to test bandwidth
4K/HDR not working
- Check Settings → Display type and verify 4K HDR is selected
- Make sure your HDMI cable supports 4K (Premium High Speed HDMI)
- Try a different HDMI port - not all ports on TVs support 4K HDR
Audio issues
- Go to Roku Settings → Audio and try different modes
- If using a soundbar, make sure it's set to the correct input
