Samsung Smart TVs (Tizen) - Complete Setup Guide

Built-in Apps Have Limitations

Samsung's built-in Plex app works fine for most content, but may struggle with some video formats compared to dedicated streaming devices. If you experience lots of transcoding, consider an Apple TV 4K, NVIDIA Shield, or Fire TV Stick 4K for better compatibility.

1 Open Plex Settings

Open the Plex app on your Samsung TV:

Open Plex → Go to Settings (gear icon in left menu)
2 Video Quality Settings
Settings → Video
Local Quality Original / Maximum

Full quality on your home network.

Remote Quality Original / Maximum

Full quality from outside your home.

Allow Direct Play ON

Plays files without conversion when possible.

Allow Direct Stream ON

Allows minor format changes without full transcoding.

3 Samsung TV Picture Settings

Now configure your TV's settings (outside of Plex):

TV Settings → General → External Device Manager → HDMI UHD Color
HDMI UHD Color (Input Signal Plus) ON for all HDMI ports you use

This enables full 4K HDR support. Without it, you're limited to 1080p!

This setting is hidden but crucial!

Many Samsung TV owners miss this setting. Without "HDMI UHD Color" or "Input Signal Plus" enabled, your TV won't display 4K HDR content properly - even on the built-in apps!

4 Picture Mode Settings
TV Settings → Picture → Picture Mode
Picture Mode Movie or Filmmaker Mode

These modes display content as the creators intended - no extra processing.

Avoid "Vivid" or "Dynamic" modes

These modes look punchy in store demos but oversaturate colors and add unwanted processing. "Movie" or "Filmmaker Mode" gives you accurate colors and proper motion.

5 Motion Settings (Important!)
TV Settings → Picture → Expert Settings → Auto Motion Plus Settings
Auto Motion Plus OFF or Custom (all sliders to 0)

Eliminates the "soap opera effect" that makes movies look like cheap video.

What is the "Soap Opera Effect"?

Motion smoothing (Auto Motion Plus) adds fake frames to make motion smoother. But movies are filmed at 24fps intentionally - adding frames makes them look like daytime soap operas or home videos. Turn it OFF for cinematic motion!

6 HDR Settings

Samsung TVs should automatically detect and enable HDR when playing HDR content. To verify:

TV Settings → Picture → Expert Settings → HDR+ Mode
HDR+ Mode OFF (recommended)

This setting tries to "convert" SDR content to look like HDR. It often makes things look worse - keep it OFF.

True HDR vs Fake HDR

True HDR: When playing actual HDR content, your TV automatically switches to HDR mode. This is good!

HDR+ Mode: Artificially processes SDR content to look like HDR. Usually looks unnatural - avoid.

✓ Verify It's Working

Here's how to check if you're getting the best quality:

  1. Start playing a movie in Plex
  2. Look for playback information (usually by pressing info/select)
  3. You want to see "Direct Play"
  4. For HDR content, your TV should show an HDR indicator
