Mac Plex Options

Plex for macOS (App Store): Native Mac app, best performance.

Web Browser: Works but has codec limitations. See Web Browser guide.

1 Install Plex
App Store → Search "Plex" → Get/Install
2 Access Settings
Open Plex → Menu bar: Plex → Preferences (or ⌘,)
3 Video Quality Settings
Preferences → Quality
Local Quality Original / Maximum

Best quality on your home network.

Remote Quality Original / Maximum

Best quality when streaming remotely.

Automatically Adjust Quality OFF

Maintain consistent quality.

4 Player Settings
Preferences → Player
Direct Play ON

Play files without server conversion.

Direct Stream ON

Allow minor format changes.

5 macOS Display Settings

If your Mac is connected to a TV or external display:

System Settings → Displays
Resolution Default for display (or scaled to preference)

Use native resolution for best quality.

Refresh Rate 60 Hz (or ProMotion if available)

Match your display's capabilities.

6 HDR on Mac

Mac HDR Support

HDR playback on Mac requires:

  • Mac with Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or specific Intel Macs
  • HDR-compatible display (Pro Display XDR, HDR TV, etc.)
  • macOS Catalina or later

If your setup supports HDR, macOS will automatically enable it for HDR content.

System Settings → Displays → (Your Display) → High Dynamic Range
High Dynamic Range ON (if available)

Enables HDR output to compatible displays.

7 Audio Settings
System Settings → Sound → Output

Select your preferred audio output device. For surround sound:

Audio MIDI Setup (in Applications/Utilities) → Configure speakers

Apple TV as Audio Output

You can AirPlay audio from your Mac to Apple TV/HomePods for better speakers. Click the Sound icon in the menu bar → Select your AirPlay device.

8 Energy Settings (Important for HTPC)

If using your Mac as a media center:

System Settings → Lock Screen
Turn display off when inactive Never (or long duration)

Prevents display from turning off during movies.

System Settings → Energy Saver (or Battery)
Prevent automatic sleeping ON when plugged in

Keeps your Mac awake for streaming.
