Mac Plex Options
Plex for macOS (App Store): Native Mac app, best performance.
Web Browser: Works but has codec limitations. See Web Browser guide.
Best quality on your home network.
Best quality when streaming remotely.
Maintain consistent quality.
Play files without server conversion.
Allow minor format changes.
If your Mac is connected to a TV or external display:
Use native resolution for best quality.
Match your display's capabilities.
Mac HDR Support
HDR playback on Mac requires:
- Mac with Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or specific Intel Macs
- HDR-compatible display (Pro Display XDR, HDR TV, etc.)
- macOS Catalina or later
If your setup supports HDR, macOS will automatically enable it for HDR content.
Enables HDR output to compatible displays.
Select your preferred audio output device. For surround sound:
Apple TV as Audio Output
You can AirPlay audio from your Mac to Apple TV/HomePods for better speakers. Click the Sound icon in the menu bar → Select your AirPlay device.
If using your Mac as a media center:
Prevents display from turning off during movies.
Keeps your Mac awake for streaming.

Video stuttering
- Check Activity Monitor for high CPU usage
- Close other resource-intensive apps
- Make sure macOS and Plex are updated
HDR not working
- Verify your Mac and display support HDR
- Check System Settings → Displays for HDR option
- Try a different cable (Thunderbolt/USB-C or HDMI 2.0+)
No audio or wrong device
- Check Sound preferences for correct output
- Click Sound icon in menu bar to switch outputs
- Restart Plex if output was changed during playback
